Sparrows engineer proud of IEng accreditation
22/11/2010Barry Nicol has been awarded IEng status by demonstrating the wide breath of knowledge he has gained during his 17 year career. His determination to achieve the accreditation without a formal degree or mentoring but instead through the ability to underpin knowledge, makes him especially proud of his award.
Since joining Sparrows in 2005 as a Project Engineer, Barry has never allowed the lack of a degree to hold him back. His own initiative and curiosity has led the way to each achievement he has gained.
Gaining Engineering Technician (EngTech) status in July 2008 served as a suitable stepping stone to IEng status. The Sparrows/Shell crane maintenance contract awarded in September 2005, of which Barry is a team member, has been a very valuable learning process. Every engineer involved with the contract over the years has gained a great deal from working closely with both Shell and the other team members.
Within his role as Contract Support Engineer, Barry has tackled many challenges, none more so than “the constantly changing day to day activities required to support our clients’ needs, whether this is the crane activities or any other technical capacity the Sparrows group can offer,” he says.
“Since joining the organisation I have faced many new challenges that have paid dividends towards accreditation,” he continues. “The IEng status will allow me to demonstrate to Shell and colleagues alike my sound engineering knowledge and how determined I am to set goals and achieve them. In the future this accreditation will support all activities that our clients require - not just in the day to day crane
activities.”
“Barry is a great example of how engineers can be developed in the company and can grow through a strong commitment to their personal development,” highlights Sparrows’ Region Operations Director Europe, Ewen Kerr - pictured above with Barry.
