Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen presents Queen’s Award for Enterprise to Sparrows
12/11/2010Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeen, Mr Peter Stephen, presented the Queen’s Award for Enterprise to Mr Doug Sedge, Chief Executive Officer of Sparrows Group, in a ceremony at the company’s Aberdeen headquarters today.
The presentation was also attended by the Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce MP, Maureen Watt MSP, Mrs Jane Adam, vice chair of Bridge of Don Community Council and more than 300 of Sparrows local onshore staff representing the company’s 1450 employees worldwide.
Sparrows received the Queen’s Award for ‘more than trebling exports to £78 million annually’.
Following a briefing on the company’s operations at home and abroad by directors, the visitors toured the company’s premises and met employees before the formal presentation.
Presenting the Award, the Lord Provost said: “To win this award is a tremendous achievement. It is an acknowledgement of the enormous amount of hard work, sheer determination and outstanding achievement in international trade by Sparrows Offshore Group Ltd.
“I am extremely proud of the way in which Aberdeen companies have risen to the challenge and for Sparrows Offshore Group Limited to receive this honour is a testimony to the enthusiasm and dedication of its management and staff.”
Addressing employees, Sparrows Offshore Group Ltd chief executive officer Doug Sedge said: “It is a great honour for me to accept this Queen’s Award for Enterprise on behalf of the Sparrows Group. But it is an even greater honour to accept it on behalf of you, the 1400 plus employees, who are the people who make Sparrows the very special company it is.
“Winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise is an important milestone for Sparrows. But milestones are not destinations; they measure our progress towards our goals. Sparrows journey to ever-increasing success continues, in the UK and around the world. This Queen’s Award is a great encouragement to us to keep striding forward.”
Rt Hon Malcolm Bruce, MP for Gordon in whose constituency Sparrows headquarters lies, said: ““I have known Sparrows for many years; Sparrows is a fine example of an Aberdeen company with global reach, giving UK exports and innovation a lot to be proud of.”
